The Future is Bright: Inspiring Student Entrepreneurs Take Centre Stage at Pitch Night

The energy was electric on Wednesday, April 3rd, as The Hub proudly hosted the final pitch night for Innovate and Elevate, St. Lawrence College’s first Entrepreneurship program. This initiative was spearheaded by our very own Breanne Johnson and Steve Janssens, and marked the conclusion of 13 intense weeks where 16 passionate student entrepreneurs transformed their ideas into something remarkable.

These students were selected from an overwhelming pool of applicants, each with a big idea they wished to make a reality. Armed with nothing but their initial concepts, they embarked on a journey of workshops, mentorship, and relentless learning – pushing boundaries and exceeding expectations every step of the way!

On pitch night, we witnessed the top 8 ideas compete for a chance to take their dreams to the next level at the European Innovation Academy in Portugal! Vamoose Vending showed us accessible vending machines full of delicious international snacks for Kingston’s diverse population. Yarn Monkey spoke to our crafty side with eco-friendly yarn, crochet kits, and other bespoke products. We saw 650 Tours offering motorcycle tours celebrating Canada’s breathtaking natural landscapes. EGL Graphics hyped up our team spirit with customizable sports apparel and event swag.

BEE-TALITY was passionate about our environment and committed to bee and pollinator conservation through education, advocacy, and practical initiatives. The Poo Pouch offered a convenient canine waste cleanup tool that prioritized hands-free, hygienic, and durable design. Orange Glove Waste Management prioritizes our country’s first caretakers, providing the community of Six Nations of The Grand River with local and reliable waste management services rooted in the stewardship of the land. Finally, Why Not seeks to boost beautiful Ontario’s tourism with local community travel destinations like our gorgeous Prince Edward County.

By the end of the night, the room was glowing with anticipation. We were all ready for the 3 winners to be announced. The judges had a difficult choice ahead of them with such strong ideas presented throughout the night. In the end, the three victors were chosen, Thomas Lantz of Orange Glove Waste Management, Krystal O’Neill creator of The Poo Pouch, and Elli Parsons of EGL Graphics claimed the victory. They will be bringing their ideas to the European Innovation Academy to gain critical skills and perspective to help refine and further their ideas.

Dream big. Start small. But most of all, start.
