Hub Highlights: March 2024

March was a whirlwind at the Innovation Hub! We collaborated with incredible students and faculty to welcome some seriously cool workshops. We wanted to take a moment and reflect on all these exceptional events:

We started the month welcoming Jessica Bredschneider and her Digital Marketing Communications class for an exceptional Agency course. Throughout March, these students worked tirelessly to support community clients like Limestone Kabob House, Inclusive Play Project, Prosfata, and Tiny Horse. We are excited to watch these projects come to fruition as we enter the last month of the Winter semester!

Then, on March 7th and 8th, our Enactus St. Lawrence College team rocked the Enactus Central Regionals Exposition! 16 students from varying backgrounds and programs along with 6 faculty advisors (Steve Janssens, Jadon Hook, Michael Carter, Breanne Johnson, Cedric Pepelea, and Gerhard Freundorfer) travelled to Mississauga to compete in 3 Impact Challenges; the TD Entrepreneurship Challenge, Innovation and Impact Challenge, Powered by Enactus Alumni, and the Canadian Tire Environmental Sustainability Challenge.

The team is now setting their sights on the Enactus Canada National Exposition in May to compete against 71 other teams from across Canada to have the chance to represent St. Lawrence College and Canada at Enactus Worlds. Good luck team! Read all about it here!

We also dove into the worlds of VR and AI for marketing with Jessica's Advertising and Marketing Communications class on March 14th and Gerhard Freundorfer’s insightful workshop on how to effectively use AI. Students learned to craft powerful prompts, to effectively use it as a tool in their work. We explored immersive video, interactive storytelling, and virtual events by delving into the metaverse like Hugo Boss’s fashion Zone and a BMW showroom. This kind of hands-on learning is where great ideas are created!

On March 19th, we hosted Frank Armstrong's Advertising and Marketing Communications class for their United Way Infographic Gallery. During this event we heard insights from United Way Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington’s president and graphic designer John DiPaolo and Gillian Moren on how impactful the United Way is and how to develop designs to be just as impactful.

These talented students showcased their skills through a gallery of infographics designed for the United Way & KFLA. Their work was both informative and visually striking, demonstrating their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.

We saw the epic conclusion of Pam Shea and Rajni Dogra's 6-week multidisciplinary project on March 20th. Students collaborated with Patrick C. Egbunonu, Kimberly Mask, Robyn Saaltink, and Meghan O’Leary, and their solutions were outstanding!

The Innovation Hub was buzzing as we watched these exceptional presentations, bringing together the Behavioral Psychology program and business students from many different programs across the SLC School of Business some of the programs being; Digital Marketing Communications, Business Marketing, and the Bachelor of Business Administration programs to develop innovative solutions for pressing community issues. We were blown away by these students' hard work and insightful solutions!

We learned from John Conrad about leadership and the traits that make an effective leader. On the 26th of March we gained valuable insights from the great stories and anecdotes that John discussed. The workshop delved into the key differences between leading yourself and leading others, equipping us with tools to excel in both areas. We learned the importance of continuous learning, asking questions, and fostering compassion and curiosity. These qualities, along with open communication and collaboration, all contribute to building strong relationships – the foundation of effective leadership.

A big thanks to Michael Richards for organizing this event, and to Emma Laporte for sharing her inspiring leadership journey!

On March 28th the Innovation Hub took part in an exceptional Entrepreneurship ideation workshop. This bootcamp was This event was one and a half hours of fantastic learning, and hands-on ideating using templates introduced by our exceptional facilitators, the Innovation Hub’s very own Jet Patrocinio and Katia Shatalova who participated through the ideation stages of their entrepreneurship journey. Read more about it here!
